Book Description (from amazon)

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery invites you back to Fool’s Gold, where a newcomer to town might finally meet the man she never knew she needed…

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can’t be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool’s Gold, California, he’s cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he’s not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe-to-toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

Your Thoughts

Ms. Mallery has done it again! She has an uncanny gift of weaving stories into intricate pieces of art that are not only beautiful and interesting, but are also somehow flawed in the most delicate way adding to their character. She is a master at her craft creating stories of love and second chances – all intertwining but never duplicated and always interesting.

Her latest piece of work When We Met, A Fool’s God Romance installment is no exception. You will be absorbed by the romance and love story of Angel and Taryn. They both have flaws – flaws that are hidden deep and explain so much about the way they present to the world. Much like people you meet every day – everyone scarred and flawed and you never knowing just how deeply. That is one of the things I enjoy most about Mallery’s Fool’s Gold books – all revolve around regular, flawed people who are given second chances at love, at life and at happiness. This book has twists and some very thoughtful one liners – such as Angel’s “Because there’s no point in saving the world if you can’t save the people you love”. The direction of self-discovery this story takes and the contrast of hard and soft, tough and weak were very refreshing. Both main characters have their moments to shine and tell their stories. While the book is emotionally intensive there are defiantly funny moments and, as always, the imagery is superb. Metaphors are thoughtfully sprinkled throughout which is an element I particularly enjoyed.

In this book other Fool’s Gold favorites make appearances – Justice, Ford, Felicia, and the Mayor, who has a little secret of her own. You will also learn more about the football boys – Jack, Sam, and Kenny. Mallery gives just enough details about “the boys” to have you anxiously waiting for their up-coming trilogy. This again is just another example of the craftsmanship Mallery puts into her stories. She doesn’t write just stories – she creates families, and communities you will think of long after reading the last page. If you have loved the other books in the Fool’s Gold Series you will love this one. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Book Description (from amazon):

Could life get any more hectic at the Lazy Windmill? With the holidays reminding Casie of every mistake she’s ever made, and her assistant Emily struggling to be a single mom, it’s anyone’s guess what the New Year will bring. Then bad boy Colt Dickenson shows up with a ring. No one has ever gotten under her skin like he has, but Casie can’t believe a rough stock cowboy will stick around for the long haul. — Still, the heart wants what it wants; love is as stubborn as family, foals, and farm equipment. And sometimes you have to face your fears to find the happiness only coming home can bring.

Your Thoughts:

What a sweet, fun, charming read!  The Lazy Windmill is the name of the ranch in South Dakota where this book takes place, and it is anything but lazy.  From beginning to end this book has something going on all the time.If you love stories about misfits then you will have no problem falling in love with every single character in this book.

Casie and Colt have known each other since they were in school. They have shared a kiss, but now Colt is ready to share his life – all he has to do is convince Casie.  However, as you will read, it proves way more difficult than it sounds.  Casie and Colt serve as surrogate parents for their brood which consist of Emily, Sophia and Ty.  All three are teenagers that need love, stability, safety, and most importantly someone who believes in them.  All three are unique characters with their own stories to tell, and all three will have your heart tied in knots.

There is A LOT going on in this book.  You have the main story of Casie and Colt, but each secondary character, Emily, Sophia and Ty, along with the ranch’s guests all have equally interesting and appealing stories.   They are all woven together beautifully and flow smoothly to give you a heart-warming read.  Symbolism is strong throughout the book, but it just adds to the charm and warmth of the read.  You will be left thinking yes there are still good people left in the world, and wishing there were a few more “Casie” and “Colts” out there – especially for young trouble teenagers.

Book Description (from amazon):

It’s December 21, and the Yancey sisters have been called home. When the girls were young, holidays at their family farm meant a tinsel-garnished tree, the scent of simmering food, and laughter ringing through the house. But as the years unfolded, family bonds fractured, and the three sisters scattered and settled into separate lives. Until now. The Yancey sisters are coming to spend the holidays with their mother. They’re also coming to bury their father.

Claire, the youngest, a free spirit who journeyed to California, returns first. Then comes Julia, the eldest, a college professor with a teenage son of her own. And finally there’s Maya, the middle child, who works so hard to be the perfect mother and wife.

During the sisters’ week together, old conflicts surface, new secrets emerge, and the limits and definitions of family are tested. And as the longest night of the year slips by and brightening days beckon, the sisters will have to answer one question: When you’re a sister, aren’t you a sister forever?

Your Thoughts:

The Sister Season is just not my cup of tea.  I like happy, light-hearted reads and this book is anything but happy and light-hearted.

It is well written and includes great characters.  The characters were dimensional and certainly realistic.  The underlying tone is what I consider dark for a story that is set around Christmas, but the situations are real life situations that lots of people are having to deal with regardless of the time of year. Some may find some of the scenes intense as the book deals with domestic abuse and suicide — but both are written about in a very delicate manner and never in any extremely violent detail.  It is a pretty quick read as the story flows and there is so much going on you what to know what happens next.

Overall, it is well-organized with great characters, but the whole book just lends itself to emotional overload.  This is definitely not a fun light-hearted Christmas read, but if you want deep soul-searching, heart-wrenching family drama at its best this is your book.

Book Description (from amazon):

On a midnight train, four hours away from her wedding, Beth McMurray discovers the devastating truth about the powerful senator she’s about to marry. Convinced nothing could make this stormy night worse, the train wrecks, and she tumbles straight into the arms of an outlaw.

Andrew McLaughlin doesn’t believe in loving except between the pages of his writings. He loved deeply once and thinks he’ll never survive another loss. To save a friend, he climbs aboard a train heading toward Dallas. In the moment before the train crashes, he saves a beautiful woman and is injured in the fall. He wakes up to find she’s claimed him as her fiancé—and now they’re both on the run, and destined to do everything it takes to make an unexpected promise of love come true.

My Thoughts:

I can sum this book up in four words – Made. For. TV. Movie.

Seriously, the entire time I was reading I could truly see every scene and every character on the big screen in my living room.  The writing was so descriptive and detailed you will have no problem envisioning every scene too.  Strong, independent characters rule the day in this dramatic read. From beginning to end you will be hooked.  Your emotions will certainly get a work out but the ending will absolutely warm your heart.  Thomas does a grand job of writing real characters that relate and play well off each other.  The story flows without a hitch and the story line is exciting and different.  Even, the scenes with the “outlaw” are unexpectedly different. I thought the story took a slight curve off course when Beth and Andrew, along with their “crew”, moved in with Beth’s family, but that was the only awkwardness and it was back on track and flowing very quickly.  I love the way the secondary characters are independent and have their own story lines. You get a lot of bang in this book with the secondary story lines!! Loved the surprise character of the priest – he entered the story at just the right moment to provide a little comic relief. This book is action and drama packed not a dull character or moment (or page)!  It is historical western romance at its finest – an awesome must read!!

Book Description (from amazon):

Bella Chatham will lose everything – her veterinary practice, her animal shelter, and even her home – if she can’t find another source of income, fast. So when her best friend signs her up for the hot new reality television show, Can You Beat a Billionaire, Bella accepts the challenge and hopes against hope she can win the ten million dollar prize. If she doesn’t, it’s bye-bye pet clinic and shelter, bye-bye Chance Creek, Montana, and hello to marriage to the billionaire for a year! Evan Mortimer, billionaire, can’t believe he’s reduced to competing in a television contest to win a wife. Unfortunately, it’s the only foolproof way to secure his position as head of Mortimer Innovations. At least he’ll be able to dump his “spouse” at the end of the year; he’s much too busy to be tied down to a country bumpkin cowgirl. Bella doesn’t expect her adversary to be handsome – or funny, or compassionate – but Evan’s all three, and he’s proving a tough competitor, too. When they end up sharing a tent – and a sleeping-bag – her body betrays her with a longing so deep it cuts her to the core. Still, this cowgirl must stay strong. If Evan uncovers her secret fears, he’ll use them to win the contest – and then he’ll own her for a year. She’ll be out of luck, out of cash, and stuck being Mrs. Mortimer until he kicks her to the curb. Too bad she can’t decide which is worse – winning the show and losing Evan forever, or losing the show and only being his temporary wife. Evan can’t believe he’s falling for the one woman who doesn’t want him. This cowgirl’s not impressed by his money, his name, or his inability to sleep in a tent with her for an entire night, but every look and touch she gives him sends his desire through the roof. With a director determined to use his claustrophobia to make him look like a fool, and an adversary so sexy he can hardly see straight, he’ll need all his savvy to come out on top. Too bad he’s going to lose no matter how this show turns out. If he beats Bella, he’ll destroy the first woman he’s ever loved. If he doesn’t beat her, it’s bye-bye Mortimer Innovations. Will either of them remember in time that it’s not who wins or who loses – it’s how they play the game that really counts?

Your Thoughts:

This is the fourth installment in the Cowboys of Chance Creek Series and it is just as awesome as the others. Actually, I think this one is my favorite out of the series.  It is exactly the kind of book I want to read after a long taxing day – a light-hearted, funny, mind-less read!  Hold up, maybe I should  include my definition of “mind-less read” if a book it so good I can get lost in the pages and not have to think about anything but the characters and the story as it unfolds, it to me is a mind-less read.  I appreciate when the story line is on course with not a lot of problem solving for the reader – my life is one big multi-step problem solving situation – so anytime a book is written well enough for me to get lost in it  – is a winner, winner!  And this book is definitely a winner!

You will fly through this book as it is written in an easy to follow simplistic way.  The story unfolds naturally and is paced very well.  Although, I must say, I did think Bella and Evan got a little too cozy quick, fast and in a hurry – but you know it is what it is, ha!  The story line itself is very unique.  With reality TV swirling around like mad in our world this book was very relatable and it is certainly the type of situation that could actually happen — and honestly probably already has (you know some situation different details).  You will absolutely fall in love with the characters of Bella and Evan. They are warm, funny, and loving people who have had tragic events in their lives that have changed the way they naturally behave and react to people and situations. But as I am sure you can imagine five days in the wilderness will certainly break you down to your natural state like nothing else will.  It was fun to read and see the comradery develop between Bella and Evan, as well as the friendly badgering.  Seton did a great job letting you know the two characters genuinely like each other and have a good time around one another.

This book is just perfect – if you are looking for a lovely fun read this is it!
